Race History

2016 Races

In summary 2016 didn’t get off to the best start:, in fact it wasn’t my best year at all if you read through.

January  – Slaughterford 9 off-road – I withdrew at last minute as Megan my four pawed running pal expectantly died

Dog & trail shoes at the ready

February – alternative events as  celebrating 20th Wedding anniversary snowboarding in Canada followed by sea swimming, stand up paddle boarding, surfing, boogie boarding, hiking and a couple of beach runs and coastal cycles in Maui Hawaii.

March – Cotswold Sportive – withdrew as storm Kate swept across UK with 50 to 60 mph winds and rain. This was the event I was hit by a car in October.

April  – Performance Edge tri training camp in Mallorca – a glorious week in mostly sunshine in the mountains of Mallorca plus a coast to coast return ride. With over 300 miles ridden, 9km swum in outdoor pool with a sea swim and 10km running with trail run & hill reps.
Whilst not races as such but personal comparison I was chuffed to come home with a bag of STRAVA PR’s mostly from the mountain segments. To see the improvements in power and climbing ability from last April & October on the same mountain passes was very pleasing.

Descending the fabulous Sa Colobra

17th LionHeart 100km Sportive – hilly one   Bronchitus forced me to withdraw from this one
24th White Horse Challenge 90 wet & windy miles, Wiltshire
29th PSOF DIY Half mix & match Macclesfield – bad weather stopped us on this one mid bike course. Hail thunder & lightning with freezing conditions not pleasant for supporters and dangerous for racers. Off to the pub instead !

4th to 6th Gower training with Chippenham Tri – brilliant few days again.
7th Wiltshire sportive 100km around rural Wiltshire – whoops actually forgot to enter this one
14th Immortal Sprint + open water lake triathlon – super scenic but shallow lake swim
22nd Velothon Wales 140km – closed roads were a dream, rain a pain.

5th Wiggle Dragon ride Wales – challenging ride but great scenery, familiar with some of course from trip in May to Gower
11th / 12th RUN24 team event – Team Calne Cruisers ran 100 miles, of which I ran 30 x6 5 mile trail loops. Got tripped in the night so a bit battered and bruised.
24th Wimbleball, Exmoor ironman 70.3 – Lived up to its reputation of toughest 70.3 on planet. Weather not as kind to us as 2014, cold, wet & windy. First time I was breathless at the end of the race -probably the start of asthma.

10th Pier to Pier BHF swim Bournemouth  – cancelled due to high winds & waves.

24th Outlaw full 140.6miles – longest & toughest race of my life

28th Severn Bridge Sportive – DNS

11th Weymouth ironman 70.3 DNS

Enter Exercise Induced Asthma – three weeks after Outlaw and I was getting breathless walking my dogs, to me this was not exercise.  August & September were very much about seeing doctors, respiratory nurses, spirometory lung function tests, X-rays & scans. Which resulted in a diagnosis and explanation of why 2016 has been such a tough year for me.

I was lucky and had great care from my local doctors and NHS for asthma. The remained of 2016 is to return to fitness I lost over 10 weeks of inactivity and asthma tests & getting medication balanced.

This also coincided with my 2-year-old springer spaniel losing his hearing.

October / November / December – the challenge now was to complete three 10km races, one a month as part of my come back to fitness and learning to live with being an asthma athlete.

Grittleton 10km October – this was a tough comeback race, cold, windy, through bonfire smoke and serious lost fitness 1:09

Swindon 10km November – a chilly and windy race post storm Angus was more beating the conditions, but an improvement 1:05

Bromham Pudding 10km  December – icy roads but dry & cold blue skies. A slim improvement and only one water stop breather but both laces came lose ( must change to elastic laces) Felt easier and seems fitness is returning slowly  1:02

Avebury8 – this year it was Avebury 9 miles. Initially not looking forward to it thinking it was beyond my fitness level and comfort zone. Just what I needed to get out and do this with friends. Brought my mug collection up to 5

Last days of shoot season for me & trying to get base training consistent whilst adding strength physical prep training. Looking for abs of steel and rock solid glutes !
Longest runs of year since Outlaw & Asthma on 11th Dec. It wasn’t pretty or easy but steady run in winter sun done. Finally managed to get a winners cup this year from team event at C&W ladies Christmas clay shooting day at Barbury.
